Vietnam to test 5G mobile network in 2019, officially launch on est. 2021

Head of the Policies and Planning Division of the Ministry of Information and Communication’s Authority of Communications Trần Tuấn Anh said Việt Nam defined 5G as network infrastructure for all sectors of the economy, not just for communication. It would be expanded, raising the working capacity of all sectors based on radio communication infrastructure.

In order to have 5G network to be implemented as soon as possible, MIC Vietnam has granted 5G temporary frequency license for Viettel - a local net work carrier to test 5G mobile network in Hanoi and HCM during 2019, Vinaphone - another local net work carrier has also already applied for temporary 5G frequency license for testing. Official frequency bands and licenses for 5G could be available for bidding by the end of 2019 or 2020 and 5G network could be officially launched in 2021 to meet the needs.

At this moment, there is no official regulation regarding test standards, and obtaining MIC Type Approval for 5G infrastructure equipment and terminal equipment yet. As usual, it would take 02 year for MIC to draft, issue, and implement test standard which are specifically applicable for 5G devices. Before the specific technical standards designed for 5G devices to enter in effect, at the beginning stage, applicable standards for 5G devices should be QCVN 47:2015/BTTTT (RF requirement) and QCVN 18:2014/BTTTT (RF EMC requirement). Base stations, repeaters, and other Infrastructure devices imported for 5G testing purpose shall still need MIC Type Approval for clearance (must be in compliance with QCVN 47:2105/BTTTT and QCVN 18:2014/BTTTT).
